On one of the highest points of the Ille-et-Vilaine department (altitude 176m), overlooking the upper valley of the river Rance, this former military stronghold still bears the marks left by various episodes from its turbulent past, while still demonstrating its remarkable capacity to adapt to the times. Linen and hemp were the source of Bécherel’s fortune between the 16th and 18th centuries. Its linen thread wes the finest in Brittany and enjoyed a reputation that extended far beyond the boundaries of the kingdom.
The town’s highly significant architectural heritage is well maintained and a vibrant focal point, earning Bécherel the title of “Brittany Small Towns of Character” in 1978.
Since 1989, this historic urban settlement has become a Cité du Livre ( the third BookVillage in Europe and the foremost in France). Houses, once belonging to noblemen and merchants, and the town’s weaving workshops are now open all year round as the haunt of booksellers-new and second-hand, artists and craftsmen.
Streets and squares still evoke memories of past activities : Cour des Chevaliers (knights), rue de la Beurrerie (Butter making), de la Filanderie (spinning), de la Chanvrerie (hemp) etc.
Booksellers, artists and craftsmen have revived these historic facades and brought the old heart of the town back to life.
